About
The Squash Blossom Local Food Buyers Club of Kansas City is a local food preorder cooperative using a model developed by the Kansas City Food Circle. Our goal is healthy locally produced food for our families, to build local living economy businesses and jobs. And keep small farmers on the land. We do this by connecting local organic farmers and produces with eaters who are concerned with their health and building a sustainable local food production infrastructure.
- We will give producers a market.
- We will use our combined buying power to transact business in a fair manner.
- We will communicate our needs and wants.
- We will challenge producers to feed us in the winter, locally.
- We will be a positive force in our communities.
How it works:
We are a Preorder Coop currently which means we get together an order
from members and when we have most sold we have our organic warehouse
source or local producer deliver it. We then divide it up and distribute it to the members who ordered.
Example: rice comes in 25lb bag so when we have 20lb ordered I will
get it delivered and the extra 5lb will usually get taken by a tardy
member. In order to keep the shipping charge low we like to order over 200/lb of combined items. We always seek local organic/natural products but not all the foods we need are produced locally.
Currently pick up is at BadSeed Farmers Market Fridays 4:30 – 8:00 1909 McGee KCMO. Or at Platte Prairie Farms by appointment .
We are currently in the process of building a online ordering system and becoming the Squash Blossom Food Cooperative similar to the Oklahoma Food Cooperative and the Nebraska Food Coop.
Our vision is to have a Coop food store in Kansas City. We will set up small satelite food stores in neighborhoods in our food deserts to serve the needs of our diverse community.
We are a multicultural Earth community with members from three continents so far. Squash Blossom is an all Volunteer effort. Want to help ?contact…
